THE HEARTBREAK OF A MISSING PET

TO HELP YOU FIND YOUR FURRY COMPANION:

  • Always have a current photo of your pet on hand.
  • Make sure your pet always wears a collar with an ID tag engraved with your dog’s name and your phone number.
  • Have your pet microchipped, so that if their ID tag is lost, they can still be identified. Verify that your microchip provider has your current contact information on file, and review the renewal requirements that some microchip companies have to keep your pet active in their database.
  • File a lost dog or cat report with your county animal control via phone or in person. Make a daily visit to the animal control facility in the county where the pet was lost to see if your dog or cat was turned in.
  • Post a free ad on NextDoor. This site allows you to choose the geographic area you want to reach. You can post a lost pet ad here.
  • Post a free ad on Craig’s List under Atlanta/Community/Lost and Found.
  • Post a free ad on these websites:

  • Post info on Facebook pages:

  • Make 100 flyers, place some in plastic sheet protectors, and hang them everywhere you can. Distribute flyers to people in your area. Include neighbors, mail carrier, veterinary offices, animal control, groomers and school bus drivers. Consider offering a reward and include that on the flyer.
  • Hang a flyer on your mailbox saying "Lost Dog Lives Here" so if someone is driving around looking for signs they know where to stop! Of course, be cautious with strangers coming to your home!
  • If your dog is microchipped, notify the company that holds the chip registration that your dog is missing. And if you are comfortable taking a found stray to a local vet, nearly all veterinarians will gladly scan a dog or cat for its microchip without charge, which can help reunite a missing pet with its owner.
  • Fax and/or email flyers of the lost or found dog to animal control in your county and surrounding counties.
  • Register your dog with Petco Love Lost, a facial recognition program. Cherokee County and Paulding County Animal Control are now using it to help dogs get home!

  • Email your HOA contact and ask them to forward the photo and description of your lost pet to everyone in your neighborhood.
